The musical A Chorus Line features that unforgettable finale number "One." In my baket (northern lingo for old woman) list is to be part of that high-kicking chorus line, even just once. Okay, okay, sing along with the chorus then if it requires a too rigorous diet-exercise regimen.
Do I really have to mention who's the one, the subject of this blog entry? Yep, she's the one: Butones Fernandez who turned one yesterday, a Holy Wednesday.
There was subdued fanfare. Her Tita Ida arrived almost at midnight. And the one woke up, restless, as though she knew that new day was special. Tita Ida hauled up a dozen mini doughnuts. Booboo lit each candle, taking care not to burn her fingers. We all sang while the one looked at the burning candles wondering what the fuss was at that unholy hour.
Next day, Ryan, her dad, arrived, bringing presents and an invitation to lunch.
After breakfast, she toyed with her pool of balls, easily picking out the ones in her peborit color of purple, which we find strange because babes her age usually go for the bright primary colors of yellow or red.
Tita Ida, ever the fashion plate, selected the one's outfit--chic black and white dress bought from Tiongsan Department Store, black tights and a pair of what we call little white comfy nurse's shoes .
The one slept all the way to City Lights on Gen. Luna street, Baguio, where we partook of the luncheon buffet. When the one woke up, the grownups had tucked in a heavy lunch and gone for walks to different parts of town on various errands (Booboo to the post office, as usual, Grumpa Rolly for a bag of pan de sal, Mamay Kimi and Tita Ida for muslin cloth).
Little one woke up with BFF Len by her side, ready to feed her a bowl of her favorite tinola with rice. BTW, Ida also picked out the bib which has a touch of red to break the almost monochromatic outfit.
And when we all returned to have our pictures taken, we all played second best to the one singular sensation, every move she makes, in our lives today.
