this first sunday of advent
i woke a few minutes before
the street lights went out
to that hour before dawn
so still & not quite light yet
the darkness & chill
warred with my thin
shawl of comfort
as i searched for the lamp button
that would light the room
where my hands needed to
finish yesterday's undone work
unfinished work
awaited as the computer
screen lit up
& verily verily
i found the dylan lyrics
to complete a tiny booklet
of collected songs
from the era of
protest when needy friends
went ignored
but before i could copy-paste
the lyrics about light & truth
& a wish for "a strong foundation
when the winds of changes shift"
to a new document,
the stillness of dawn
was broken by a more real
chorus of birds
sparrows greeting
the lemony yellowy
sun rays falling slightly
on the pines beyond
the windows of a once
dark room
oh youth once tasted &
in many ways wasted!
oh graying friends still needing
an elder's a peer's
a sister's acknowledgment!
rent your souls of that
infantile need to belong
compel your eyes to gaze
at the birds
listen to their song
once more
then grab & hug the light
of another young morning
